J. Chotaš and H. Gutschmidt: Selected Topics from Hegel’s Elements of the Philosophy of Right
Hegel’s Elements of the Philosophy of Right (1820) is one of the most important texts of Modern philosophy of law and politics. It influences important schools of political and legal thought until this day (e.g. communitarianism). In our seminar, we will deal with the most important topics discussed in Hegel’s philosophy of right, such as his theory of the state, theory of civil society, and his treatment of ethical life. In exploring these subjects, we will try to link Hegel scholarship with the perspective of modern political philosophy. The seminar will be held in German. It is intended for students from all years of study as well as for academics and interested members of the public.

Requirement for receiving a credit for the course:
Each week, we will read and discuss a particular passage. To receive a credit, students will be required to submit an essay (at least 10 pages long) on a subject previously discussed with us.

Hegels Philosophie des Rechts/Hegel's Elements of the Philosophy of Right (1820) gehört zu den bedeutendsten Texten der neuzeitlichen Philosophie des Rechts und der Politik. Es beeinflusst bis heute wichtige Schulen des Rechts- und politischen Denkens (z. B. Kommunitarismus/communitarism). Wir behandeln in unserem Seminar die wichtigsten Themen von Hegels Philosophie des Rechts, z. B. Hegels Theorie des Staates/of the State, der bürgerlichen Gesellschaft/civil society und der Sittlichkeit/Ethical Life. Wir versuchen dabei Perspektiven der Hegel-Forschung mit den Perspektiven der modernen politischen Philosophie zu verbinden. Wir halten das Seminar auf Deutsch. Es ist offen für Studenten aller Semester, Akademiker und Allgemeininteressierte.

Anforderungen für das Testat/Grade:
Jede Woche lesen wir einen Textabschnitt und diskutieren. Um ein Testat zu erhalten, ist eine Hausarbeit/Essay (mindestens 10 Seiten) erforderlich, deren Thema vorher abgesprochen werden muss.
