English

The crucial importance of imagination follows traditionally from its status “in between” sense-perception and thought. The seminar will start with taking stock of this traditional conceptions in its most important historical versions from Aristotle to Kant. The bulk of the seminar will then consist in reading and discussion a representative sample of recent and contemporary theories of imagination, from P. F. Strawson to Amy Kind, Jennifer Church, Tamar Gendler, Ian Phillips or Kendall Walton.

Zásadní význam představivosti jako filosofického problému plyne z jejího postavení mezi smyslovým vnímáním, pro něž máme zvláštní tělesné orgány, a myšlením, které oddělujeme od ryze tělesných funkcí. Představivost je tradičně schopností nebo činností, které obě sféry propojuje a zajišťuje vzájemnou komunikaci vnímání a rozumu. Na pozadí této základní shody je však představivost předmětem nejrůznějších výkladů; jasné není ani to, zda tomuto pojmu skutečně odpovídá jednotná činnost naší mysli, nebo jím označujeme soubor vzájemně odlišných úkonů. Cílem semináře je proto představit základní koncepce představivosti a vyjasnit problémy, s nimiž se tyto koncepce potýkají (s důrazem na nemožnost redukovat představivost na názornou vizualizaci, která je jejím nejnápadnějším, v řadě ohledů však zavádějícím rysem).
Úvodní semináře nastíní genealogii problému ve vybraných textech počínaje Aristotelem a jeho typicky dvojznačným kladením představivosti jak na stranu vnímání, tak na stranu rozumu. Dalšími stručně probíranými autory budou Hobbes, Descartes, Kant, a také básník Samuel Taylor Coleridge, jehož rozlišení mezi „imagination“ a „fancy“ (Biographia Literaria kap. IV) nás seznámí s vlivnou romantickou koncepcí obraznosti, jež přetváří kantovské pojetí představivosti jako transcendentální a do značné míry nevědomé činnosti.
Navazující a hlavní část semináře představí vzorek současných diskusí, týkajících se různorodosti představivosti, představivosti a novějších teorií vnímání, představivosti a paměti, individuálních rozdílů v činnosti představivosti, a také empatie a etické role představivosti.

Podmínkou získání atestu je pravidelná účast a referování jednoho z textů, které budou účastníkům dostupné jako PDF v SISu (od konce září). Konkrétní rozvržení témat na celý semestr spolu s referáty upřesníme v prvním semináři s ohledem na počet účastníků.
