The course "Limits of Philosophy B" is a complementary course to the course "Limits of Philosophy A". The specific content of the course undergoes partial changes in each semester.
In the winter semester 2025-2026, the seminar will deal with philosophy's relation to animals: Another seminar devoted to philosophy and animals will focus more closely on the ethical (and potentially political) dimension of human relations with wild and domestic animals. A brief introduction in the first seminar will indicate that philosophical attitudes toward animals still rely on the foundation that originated in ancient philosophy and encompasses the entire spectrum of answers to the question of whether animals other than humans can think and feel emotions. Our criticism of this foundation will start by revisiting the hierarchy that sees humans as the pinnacle of the animal kingdom and other species as minor or major deviations from the human-defined standard. In addition to criticizing this concept, we will also consider whether it is possible to avoid humanizing animals and whether it is possible to work with various anthropomorphisms in a constructive way. From basic questions about animal capacities, we will gradually move on to animals whose lives are lived under the inescapable influence of humans. From Peter Singer’s “animal liberation”, we will thus arrive at the “animal crisis” discussed by Alice Crary and Lori Gruen, among others (for more detail on this progress, see the texts listed in the seminar syllabus). Podmínkou úspěšného zakončení předmětu je pravidelná účast a referát některého z textů v sylabu. Referáty budou rozděleny během úvodního semináře. V případě většího množství účastníků lze referát nahradit písemnou prací na některé z témat seminář, tato práce však nemůže nahradit účast na seminářích.
