In the Greek philosophical tradition, vision is the paradigm of sensory cognition and, to a large extent, also a model for non-sensory cognition (it is no coincidence that the terms "idea" and "eidos" are etymologically related to vision). Light is then thematized as a key condition for the visible to become seen. In the Platonic and Aristotelian traditions, we find repeated attempts to find an analogue of light also on the level of non-sensory cognition.
Our seminar will map the main line of development from Plato, through Aristotle, to Plotinus, both in terms of the theory of vision and the role of light in it, and in terms of the analogy of light on the level of non-sensory cognition. We will read and discuss key texts, particularly from Plato's dialogues Timaeus and The Republic, Aristotle's On the Soul, and selected treatises from Plotinus' Enneads.
