Annotation -
In recent decades, history and its interpretation have become important cultural phenomena, not only in literature but also in other cultural areas. Finnish history from medieval times until the end of 19th century underwent several major changes. These changes are not only interpreted in textbooks and academic texts written by historians, but also in literary works., which therefore become important participants in the creation of a collective historical narrative. These interpretations of history are therefore vital not only for understanding Finnish history, but also the present day. Since the second half of the 20th century, several literary works have helped determine, or even change, the social discourse of history.
The main aim of this one-semester course is to introduce students to the depiction and interpretation of early Finnish history in Finnish literature and culture. The course will not only focus on Finnish history, but also on its wider context within the Nordic, European and global context. Students will then read selected chapters and parts of texts, analysing and comparing how authors depict specific historical events and larger historical periods. The focus will be on which historical events of early Finnish history were highlighted in Finnish literature and culture, and why, and which were omitted.
