This course attempts to first introduce students to basic geographic and human landscape of Southeast Asia in a broader context. The main aim, however, will be to delve into the political history, with some cultural excursions, of this region, specifically focusing on the individual countries of Indonesia, Malaysia and the Philippines.
We shall pay attention to state-making processes of the pre-colonial period, the colonial era and, of course, the emancipation processes and post-colonial period.
This course will require some shorter home readings. The course is open to students of all humanities and social science programs. There will be an oral exam at the end of the semester.
