Annotation -
This survey course traces the development of Scandinavian literature from the beginnings of writing to Romanticism. In the medieval period we will focus in particular on the literature written in Iceland, where a literature unique in the European context was comitted to velum. These are mainly Eddic and Skaldic poetry and its two main sources, the Edda and Snorri's Edda, which are a rare source of information on Old Norse mythology. The course will also discuss a specifically Icelandic genre, the saga. The literature of Denmark, Norway and Sweden will not be neglected in the course. Students will also learn about the characteristics of the Nordic ballad, as well as the work of Saint Birgitta. The scope of the course is not limited to the Middle Ages; later periods such as Classicism, Pre-Romanticism and Romanticism will also be discussed. In these periods we will always be interested in the renaissance of medieval Nordic fabrics in the work of key authors such as Adam Oehlenschläger, Johannes Ewald and N. F. S. Grundtvig.
