The seminar offers an introduction to the Bavarian dialect area from a historical, dialectological and sociolinguistic perspective. It deals with the distinction between ‘Bairisch’ and ‘Bayrisch’, central phonetic, morphosyntactic and lexical features of Bavarian, as well as selected Bavarian texts. Regional varieties of Bavarian (especially Viennese) are also discussed, as are language contact with neighbouring languages and questions of linguistic identity. The aim is to provide an in-depth understanding of the structure, change and social function of Bavarian dialects.

Das Seminar bietet eine Einführung in den bairischen Dialektraum aus sprachhistorischer, dialektologischer und soziolinguistischer Perspektive. Es behandelt die Abgrenzung von „Bairisch“ und „Bayrisch“, zentrale lautliche, morphosyntaktische und lexikalische Merkmale des Bairischen sowie ausgewählte bairische Texte. Regionale Varietäten des Bairischen (insb. Wienerisch) werden ebenso thematisiert wie der Sprachkontakt mit Nachbarsprachen und Fragen sprachlicher Identität. Das Ziel ist es, ein vertieftes Verständnis für Struktur, Wandel und gesellschaftliche Funktion bairischer Dialekte zu vermitteln.
