Annotation -
In the course Grammar of Contemporary German IV, the grammar of the sentence, i.e. syntax, is discussed after the courses Grammar of Contemporary German I-III, which dealt with individual word classes mainly from a morphological point of view. During the semester, the basics of this discipline and different perspectives of syntax description will be presented. In the seminar part, numerous exercises and analyses are carried out which are helpful for understanding the relationships at the level of the German sentence. Part of the seminars will also be devoted to the critical reading of specialist texts.

Course completion requirements -

The course is concluded with an examination consisting of a written and an oral component. The written component focuses primarily on practical language skills and the material covered in the seminar, while the oral component focuses on the material covered in the lectures. Both components primarily require knowledge of the material covered in Grammar of Contemporary German IV, supplemented by basic knowledge from the preceding grammar courses. The oral component may be taken only after successfully completing the written component.

Requirements for admission to the written component:

  • regular attendance at the seminar (a maximum of three absences);

  • active participation in seminar discussions;

  • completion of the assigned reading;

  • independent completion of the exercises assigned for each seminar.

A score of 70% is required to pass the written component of the examination. If a student fails to reach this threshold, the final grade is 4 (fail). If the 70% threshold is met, the final grade is determined on the basis of both examination components combined. In the event of a borderline result, greater weight is given to the oral component. The written and oral components are always held on the same day. Both instructors are present during the oral component.
