The course is primarily intended for international students who come to the Faculty of Arts of Charles University for their semester/two-semester internship and who have been, based on the placement test, classified as level 1, 2. Students of other levels and domestic students from the Faculty of Arts or other faculties may enroll in the course only in the case of free capacity and after prior consultation with the teacher. (Due to the arrival time of interns and possible postponement of their teaching, the decision on free capacity is usually made before the end of the deadline for enrolment in SiS.)
Because the main pronunciation training method is ultrasound, the training will be focused on those speech sounds that can be well demonstrated by ultrasound. Ultrasound tongue imaging is a safe and non-invasive method that shows the shape, position, and movement of the tongue inside the mouth while speaking. This method makes it possible to become aware of the necessary tongue movements and correct them in real-time while speaking. The speech sounds that can be effectively trained using ultrasound include the consonants R and L, the palatal consonants Ť, Ď, Ň, and selected vocalic qualities. We plan to focus on R and L sounds. A check will be made at the beginning of the course to determine if the course is suitable for an individual student. If it appears that for a particular student, practice with ultrasound would not result in effective improvement of his/her articulation skills, the student will be recommended another course or self-study. The aim of the course is to expand the students' speaking competence, both in terms of speech production and perception. Ultrasound will be used to practice the pronunciation, therefore the training will focus on those speech sounds that can be well demonstrated by it. In this course, these are mainly the consonants R and L; the palatal consonants Ť, Ď, Ň, and selected vocals in terms of quality could be practise in case of need. If a student fails to turn in an assignment on time, he/she will be given a 0.5 to 1 absence depending on the exact assignment. - Written work: analysis of a recorded speech according to specified criteria, especially differences from standard Czech pronunciation.
