The course focuses on literary and cultural development in the Czech lands in the second half of the 19th century, i.e. it maps artistic changes and movements from the Májovci generation to the end of the century, i.e. to the advent of modernism, symbolism and decadence. The lectures will also include excursions into the visual arts and sports, allowing a more systematic portrayal of the artistic and cultural flowering of the 19th century. Czech culture and literature will also be viewed against the background of contemporary art-theoretical and philosophical concepts, as well as social and political changes.

The course (seminar) is completed in both the winter and summer semesters with a credit, the lectures are certified by an oral examination at the end of the summer semester. Conditions of individual attestations: 1) active and regular participation in seminars (i.e. maximum three unexcused absences, active approach, study of prescribed texts, completion of assignments, participation in discussions), 2) own elaboration and presentation of a paper on a pre-agreed topic (important personality of Czech cultural life, literary text, cultural institution) b) examination: the examination will be conducted in an oral form (approximately 20 minutes long interview), which will consist of two parts: 1) a cultural-historical part - the student will draw one of the questions corresponding to the titles of the lectures in the winter and summer semesters, speak independently on the given topic first and then answer additional questions (10 minutes) and 2) a specific part, which will be based on the student's list of studied primary and possibly also secondary literature (10 minutes). In order to be admitted to the oral examination, the student must send the instructor a list of the primary literature studied, including all necessary bibliographic data, at least one week before the examination date! The reading list must be representative, i.e. at least two-thirds of the titles from the prescribed primary literature. Without this list, the student will not be able to pass the attestation!
