Annotation -
The course follows on the Phonetics and Phonology of English I course. It introduces the sound system of contemporary Standard British English at the suprasegmental level. It focuses on linking between words, lexical stress, and especially on the prosodic properties of English at the level of the prosodic phrase, i.e. intonation and rhythm, based on the latest knowledge of spoken English, including a focus on the specific elements of reduction and linking in connected English speech. Seminars continue to build skills related to the analysis of British English pronunciation and students’ own pronunciation, with an emphasis on effective phrasal prosody. Seminar work focuses on listening analysis of students’ own pronunciation.
