The course introduces the sound patterns of contemporary Standard British English at the segmental level, primarily from an articulatory and perceptual perspective. The sound characteristics of English will be related to Czech and, for typologically unusual features of English (e.g. richness of the vocalic system, the word-final voicing contrast), possibly also to general principles. The main pronunciation variants in the most important varieties of English will also be briefly mentioned. The course will also focus on phonetic and phonological processes that occur in continuous speech, such as coarticulation, assimilation or elision. Seminars focus on building skills related to the analysis of English pronunciation, both of Standard British and students’ own pronunciation; improving the students’ own pronunciation in English at the segmental level is also one of the key objectives of the course. The seminar work links transcription skills and listening analysis.

Kurz studenty seznámí se zvukovým systémem současné standardní britské angličtiny na segmentální úrovni, především z hlediska artikulačního a percepčního. Zvukové vlastnosti angličtiny budou vztahovány k češtině, u typologicky neobvyklých rysů angličtiny (např. bohatost vokalického systému, znělostní kontrast ve finální pozici) případně i k obecným zákonitostem. Stručně budou zmíněny i hlavní výslovnostní varianty v nejdůležitějších varietách angličtiny. Kurz se zaměří i na fonetické a fonologické procesy, k nimž v souvislé řeči dochází, jako koartikulace, asimilace či elize. Semináře se zaměřují na budování dovedností spojených s analýzou výslovnosti angličtiny, a to výslovnosti standardní britské i vlastní výslovnosti studentů; zlepšení vlastní anglické výslovnosti na segmentální úrovni rovněž představuje jeden z klíčových cílů kurzu. Seminární práce propojuje transkripční dovednosti a poslechovou analýzu.

Course completion requirements -
Credit requirements: min. 70% attendance, active participation in seminars and in short tasks in MS Teams, 2 short tests, seminar work (transcription and listening analysis), correct pronunciation at the segmental level (based on a text), reading of phonemic transcription, participation in one perception test. Two resit terms in total are available to complete the credit.
All credit requirements must be fulfilled by the end of the academic year in which the student was enrolled into the course.

Požadavky k zápočtu: min. 70% docházka, aktivní účast v seminářích a plnění krátkých úkolů v MS Teams, 2 krátké testy, seminární práce (transkripční a poslechová analýza), správná výslovnost na segmentální úrovni (na základě textu), čtení fonémické transkripce, účast na jednom percepčním testu. Pro složení zápočtu jsou poskytnuty celkově dva opravné termíny.
Všechny požadavky pro zápočet je nutné splnit do konce zkouškového období akademického roku, ve kterém si student předmět zapsal.
