English Language Seminar (I, II) <br>

This two-term seminar is designed as a practical language foundation course compulsory for all first-year students on the Anglistika-Amerikanistika bachelor's programme.
It is available only to students of this programme.

Its primary aim is to better equip the student for academic studies in the field by: <br>
<br>
– further activating and developing productive skills in both speaking and writing for application in the academic environment<br>
– maximizing proficiency in the receptive skills of reading and listening for application in the academic environment<br>
– consolidating and extending advanced language-structural (grammatical, syntactical) skills <br>
– expanding lexis particularly – although not only – in preparation for study in the specialist field (linguistic terminology etc) and for academic writing in general <br>
– increasing lexical awareness and scope particularly with regard to collocation, synonymity, phraseology and idiomaticity <br>
– working on finer details of pronunciation as and when necessary<br>
– paying attention to English-language style and appropriacy in the academic environment.<br>

Course completion requirements -

Course requirements

Assessment is continual. Credit is granted on the basis of:

  • regular attendance, with a maximum of 2 excused absence during the term (excused absences = agreed upon with tutor in advance, or due to illness with medical note). No unexcused absences allowed.

  • active participation in class exercises, discussions, and peer work; timely completion of homework tasks;

  • active participation in the academic debate sessions. No unexcused absences allowed.

  • three in-class vocabulary tests during the term in sessions 4, 8 and 12 (via Moodle; 70% pass; one resit is possible); 

  • final credit test (zápočet) in the examination period (covering academic language, grammar and vocabulary); one resit is possible; pass mark 70%. 

 

English Language Seminar I (Winter Term) is a prerequisite for English Language Seminar II, which is taught in the Summer Term.

Only those students who have obtained credit for English Language Seminar I will be permitted to register for English Language Seminar II in February.

All credit requirements must be met by the end of the academic year in which the student enrolled for this subject.

  • academic conduct (e.g. referencing, use of sources, plagiarism, AI).

  • academic language (e.g. vocabulary, style, register).

  • grammar (e.g. structures common in academic writing).

  • 2 academic debates on given subjects, researched and conducted in groups.
