OBJECTIVES
This is a practical course designed to improve and develop students' skills in writing for academic purposes. It aims to help students develop a critical awareness of their researching and writing processes. We will be exploring different writing styles and the uses of various rhetorical devices, writing and during the Semester will progress from basic report/review writing through to persuasive or argumentative writing. Particular attention will be paid to correct use and presentation of source materials, the composition of bibliographies and revision of draft papers. Students will be required to submit written homework on a regular basis.

přednáška:
Přednáška v prvé řadě vymezuje obor "amerických kulturních studií" a podává přehled o teoretických přístupech k tématu. Seznamuje studenty s významy zeměpisného pojmu "Amerika" a s dějinami severní Ameriky v období předkoloniálním a koloniálním. Probírá také významná údobí a témata historie Spojených států a nejdůležitější aspekty současné politické situace v USA.
seminář:
Kurs je koncipován jako přehled hlavních politických, ekonomických, společenských, náboženských a intelektuálních tendencí a událostí v dějinách USA od "předkolumbovského období" po současnost. Klade si také za cíl odhalit základy americké civilizace a mentality - způsobů, jakým Američané nahlížejí sebe a své vztahy s ostatními a svět kolem sebe - a porovnat jejich kulturní a intelektuální "návyky" s evropskými a zejména českými.
