How does the EU interact with the wider world? What institutions and procedures shape EU external relations? How do the key policy areas that constitute EU foreign relations differ from one another? What is the role of the member states? This course will introduce the EU external relations policies and discuss why the EU is active on some issues and surprisingly silent on others.

The course will be a combination of lectures and students’ presentations on selected case studies. Students will be expected to know the prescribed reading thoroughly when coming to the class. The case studies will trace the practice of EU’s diplomacy towards selected countries and regions. The strengths and weaknesses that arise from the European architecture will be analysed and discussed during the classes.

For the purpose of the course, students will be working in groups on joint presentations and individually on final papers.

In the academic year 2020/2021, the course will be taught twice weekly in the period 29th September - 6th November.
