The aim of the subject is to learn students to understand general pharmacological principles. This understanding is important for the study of specific classes of drugs (scheduled later in courses of the 3rd, 4th and 5th section and of the Master’s study of General Medicine). Physicians should understand how and why drugs act in order to use them rationally in therapy. An additional aim is to learn students to prescribe a drug. |

Methods of teaching Teaching is in the form of lectures and practicals. The topic of lecture is mostly discussed in the immediately following practical by a form of quiz. Therefore, students should be coming to practicals with basic knowledge on the scheduled topic acquired in the lecture, its study materials (e.g. *.ppt ducuments on http://vyuka.lf3.cuni.cz/) and from recommended literature. The pharmacology room is equipped with computer stations for students and with a software enabling computer simulation of drug effects, and pharmacokinetics. |

Requirements for examination (2019-2020)
A condition for a successful passing the subject "General Pharmacology" is to meet criteria of a Final test from general pharmacology. A prerequisite for writing the final test is obtaining a credit from general pharmacology. The credit is obtained after at least 80% attendance of practicals and meeting criteria of four interim tests (Tests for credits) during the course of General pharmacology: 1st TEST for credit - PHARMACODYNAMICS I (Pharmacology of autonomic nervous system - Teaching Unit (TU) 5-8) - 5th week of the semester 2nd TEST for credit - PHARMACOKINETICS (Basic principles, biotransformation and elimination of DRUGS, TU drugs TU 1-4, 10) - 7th week of the semester 3rd TEST for credit - PHARMACODYNAMICS II (Pharmacology of selected receptors, ion channels, enzymes and regulatory systems - TU 9, 11-16, 18)- 10th week of the semester 4th TEST for credit - DRUG PRESCRIPTION (TU 24) - 13th week of the semester
The tests for credits will be multiple-choice, will be written during practicals in semester weeks given above.
Examination Examination will be in a form of final multiple-choice test
Terms of exam (Final tests): Jan 30, 2020 - 10:00-11:30 Feb 6, 2020 - 10:00-11:30 Feb 13, 2020 - 10:00-11:30
Capacity: 75 students per term, Final tests will be written in the Syllaba lecture halls (30/01 and 13/02) and Jonáš lecture hall (06/02)
Other exam terms are: 20/02, 14/5, 11/6 and 10/9/2020 (the place will be specified in advance).
The questions of the final test will be mainly based on topics in seminars and lectures (!!!):
Basic terminology in pharmacology Principles of pharmacokinetics Autonomic pharmacology - sympathetic system. Autonomic pharmacology - parasympathetic system. Biotransformation and elimination of drugs, drug interactions. Drugs acting via dopamine, serotonin, histamine Drugs acting by inhibition of enzymes
Drugs acting via ion channels and transporters Principles of pharmacologic blood pressure control Drug and remedy addiction Biological therapy, gene therapy, pharmacogenetics Drug discovery and development. Preclinical and clinical trials. EBM. Placebo. Adverse drug reactions. Regulatory agencies (EMA etc). Pharmacovigilance. Pharmacoeconomics. Complementary and Alternative Medicine (CAM), homeopathy Principles of toxikology - intoxications, termination of drug effect.
In case of failure in the final test, a student will have a possibility of another test (2nd test). In case of failure in the 2nd test, a 3rd test will be possible as the last chance.
