Amanda Imola Szabo: Scientific experiences of a meteorology PhD student from Budapest - different aspects of climate research and classification

And a short introduction: During the presentation the audience will be able to hear about my scientific background and interest. First a short introduction to the Department of Meteorology, Eotvos University, Budapest and a few words about my experiences from my first Erasmus in the Department of Meteorology and Geophysics, University of Vienna. After that I am going to present a brief summary of my bachelor research about gully erosion in Madagascar and in the end my latest results regarding the topic of climate classification based on climatological data and human characteristics.

Mgr. Zuzana Kluková: Capability of air exchange rate to predict ventilation of three-dimensional street canyons

As the most of the world’s population lives in cities it is critical to understand dispersion processes of pollutants in urban areas. This study focuses on so called air exchange rate (ACH) index which is frequently used by numerical studies to determine the ventilation of street canyons without a simulation of a pollution source. These studies applied the ACH on idealised 2D street canyons where the ventilation acts only through the one opening - roof top. There are two pertinent questions: i) is the ACH really capable to predict the ventilation of a street canyon without knowing of pollutant source; and ii) how much the ACH differs between 2D and 3D street canyons? To answer these questions, we performed large-eddy simulations of pollution of complex 3D street canyons from ground-level line sources. We computed ACHs and spatially-average concentrations for three different street canyons and compare these quantities with those from previous studies. Results clearly demonstrate that these quantities strongly depend not only on street-canyon geometry but also on geometry of surrounding buildings. It is also shown that 2D canyon give unrealistic result for retention of pollutant within an urban street canyon. The ACH might lead to a significant underestimation of street-canyon ventilation if a source would be outside the canyon.

 

Mgr. Ondřej Vlček: Update of air quality improvement plans - analytical part

Ministry of Environment of the Czech Republic is responsible for updating of the air quality improvement plans in 2019. Czech Hydrometeorological Institute was selected to prepare analytical data, which will be used for the proposal of the concrete measures that should assure that the air quality limits are not exceeded. This presentation will introduce results of the modelling part, which was aimed to determine source categories responsible for the unsuitable ambient air quality.

Ing. Jana Ďoubalová: The air quality research experience of a fresh Ph.D. student

I will share my work experience in air pollution modelling over the past two and a half years at the Czech Hydrometeorological Institue and the Department of Atmospheric Physics at the Faculty of Mathematics and Physics. I will mainly focus on a summary of three research projects I'm currently participating in: SAMIRA (SAtellite based Monitoring Initiative for Regional Air quality), Urbi Pragensi and CAMS-81 Global and regional emissions. Finally, I will outline my research plans during the course of my Ph.D. studies in the field of urban air pollution modelling.

Aritina Haliuc, Ph.D.: From mud to climate: unrevealing the impact of past and more recent climate changes on local environments.

This presentation is an invitation to a journey through time and space, starting 13,000 years ago in N Germany and going up to the more recent past, last 150 years in NW Romania. Digging in lake mud, each location and time frame discussed has its own story, with localized environmental and climatic features. In the frame of the postdoctoral project, present and future research plans will be the focus of the presentation.

Mgr. Jan Skořepa: Nonlinear signal in reanalysed geopotential and temperature data

 

In presentation I sumarize content of article of the same name submitted in impacted journal. Global reanalysed daily data of temperature and geopotential in 500 hPa pressure level are analyzed. Nonlinearity of signal is determined by largest Lyapunov exponent and by forecast error of nonlinear prediction one day ahead. For assessing amount of nonlinearity so called surrogate data are generated. Geographical distribution of nonlinearity depends on predicted variables, usually nonlinearity cannot be found around equator and it is highest in the midlatitudes.

RNDr. Eva Holtanová, Ph.D.: Uncertainties in regional climate model outputs

Recent research aimed at the analysis of uncertainties in RCM outputs and interaction between nested RCM and its driving GCM will be introduced. The methods used for the analysis include modern statistical approach of functional data analysis. Further, experience from the research stay at University Graz will be shared.

Mgr. Tereza Nováková:  On the assessment of urbanization application in weather forecasting model

In this presentation I summarize the results of my master's thesis where the basic principles of urbanization application in the numerical weather model are described, as well as different urban parameterizations available in numerical model WRF (Weather Reseach and Forecasting). Number of validation experiments were performed for summer and winter episode in non-hydrostatic mode at 3,3 km resolution, where different urban parametrizations, antropogenic heat adjustment and impact of mosaic land-use were tested. In addition, April 2018 Prague weather forecast was verificated in consideration of urban heat island.

Mgr. Michal Žák, Ph.D.: New meteorological measurements at the Troja campus area

The presentation will briefly introduce planned installation of devices for measurements of basic meteorological elements and selected air quality indicators in the area of the Faculty of Maths and Physics in Troja.

Mgr. Jan Karlický: Comparison of modelled values of radiation and thermal balance members in urban and rural environments

Different physical properties of artificial surfaces used in cities cause the urban heat island (UHI), which is the most distinct feature of urban climate. Members of radiation and thermal balance (RTB) are also affected by urban surfaces, which is connected with the altered meteorology. On the other hand, models are appropriate tools in capturing of UHI effect, as results from previous studies. The aim of this contribution is to show how models are able to capture values of RTB members and their changes in urban environment. The evaluation is performed for seasonal values and also for special meteorological conditions with above-average temperatures (heat waves), in which the UHI effect is the most damaging for inhabitants.
