This course provides a comprehensive overview of functional foods and dietary supplements in relation to health promotion and physical activity. Participants will gain an evidence-based understanding of bioactive compounds, their mechanisms of action, safety considerations and regulatory aspects. Emphasis is placed on practical applications in sport, prevention of lifestyle-related diseases, and support of physical and mental performance. The course also develops the ability to critically assess commercial claims and to make informed decisions regarding the effective and safe use of supplements in active populations.
Functional Foods and Dietary Supplements in Supporting Health and Physical Activity
Course Schedule (8 hours)
1. Functional Foods: Definitions, Classification and Practical Use – 2.5 h
• Core definitions and the regulatory framework for functional foods
• Main groups of bioactive components (polyphenols, probiotics, fibre, omega-3 fatty acids, etc.)
• Mechanisms of action and evidence-based benefits for health and physical activity
• Criteria for evaluating product quality (purity, additives, contaminants)
• Discussion: navigating marketing claims and health-related declarations
2. Vitamins and Secondary Metabolites – 2.5 h
• Overview of key vitamins relevant to active populations
• Absorption, metabolism, deficiency and toxicity risks
• Secondary plant metabolites (flavonoids, carotenoids, phytoestrogens, etc.) – biological effects and practical applications
• Quality, stability and bioavailability of vitamin supplements
• Discussion: commercial strategies, formulation types and efficacy
3. Minerals in Relation to Health and Physical Activity – 2 h
• Essential and trace minerals: functions, recommended intake, risks of deficiency or excess
• Interactions of minerals with diet, physical load and supplementation
• Practical considerations: suitable chemical forms (chelates, inorganic salts), purity and labelling
• Discussion: interpreting supplement labels and assessing appropriate dosage
4. Synergistic and Antagonistic Effects of Bioactive Compounds – 1 h
• Synergistic interactions among vitamins, minerals and secondary metabolites
• Antagonisms and potentially harmful combinations (e.g., Ca–Fe, Zn–Cu, antioxidants vs. training adaptations)
• Principles of designing rational supplementation strategies for active individuals
• Discussion: practical cases, common mistakes in supplementation, interpretation of scientific evidence
