Guidelines
The Japanese language has many varied forms of conditionalwhich have been treated in meticulously in previous research (Masuoka 1993,NihongoKijutsubunpoKenkyukai2011etc.). There are morphologically marked conditionals such asV-tara, V-ba, V-to; conditionals expressed by auxiliary nouns such asbaaior by larger constructions such asV-te waetc. These formsapart from expressing various types of condition such aspredictive, epistemic, counterfactual, arealsopart of numerous constructions. These typicallypartially overlapin their meaning and use but also have their specific traits.
The presentthesis, methodologically anchored in the theory of construction grammar(Langacker 2008), aims to produce a structured survey of these constructions, with the emphasiz on the semantic intersections and nuances that distinguish constructions containing various conditionals.
The resulting model will be supported by examples excerpetd from balanced corpora built by National Institute of Japanese Language and Linguistics.
