Guidelines
Tato bakalářská práce bude pojednávat o jazyku spojeném s postižením, jak byl používán v předešlých letech, zejména v druhé polovině minulého století v porovnání s tím, jak je používán v posledních pěti letech. Budou zkoumané začátky slova disability, které je momentálně zvoleno jako korektní výraz. Zároveň se bude práce zabývat několika dalšími otázkami jako: která slova byla používáná v minulosti před tím než byla politická korektnost nějak řešena a začala diktovat která slova se mohou používat, kdy se tato změna v jazyku stala a které výrazy jsou používány dodnes a v jakém kontextu. K tomu se ještě soustředí na termíny, které jsou považovány za nepřijatelné, ale vypovídají o společnosti ve které byly používané. Při problematice termínů spojených s postižením se neopominou ani slovesa nebo přidavná jména, která se objevují v okruhu diskutovaných termínů a diagnóz indikujících míru postižení. Výsledkem bude historický přehled slov spojených s postižením a jejich realizace a frekvence v rámci sociálních sítí a novinových článků v současné době. Hlavním zdrojem výzkumu budou korpusy COCA, English web corpus (který bude používán pro analýzu posledních 5 let), COHA (pro slova z minulého století) a další. Frekvence termínů postižení a jejich kolokace budou analyzovány. Pod tímto textem se nachází některé ze zdrojů, které budou použivány pro tuto práci. Po shromázdění dat o nejvíce používaných termínech budou data porovnána a analyzována pro finální přehled a výsledek výzkumu. Práce bude vypracována v anglickém jazyce. This bachelor thesis will discuss disability language as it was used in former times, focussing primarily on the latter half of the 20th century in comparison to today’s linguistic practices of the last 5 years. Beginnings of the term disability now used as the correct term will be discussed, as well as questions, such as what words were used before political correctness started to dictate word usage related to disability, when this emergence of politically correct language happened, and what terms are used nowadays and in which contexts. In addition, the focus will be on terms which are considered unacceptable today because they still, in a certain way, reflect the zeitgeist of the societies when they were primarily used. Writing about correct terms concerning disabled people, it is not enough to focus only on how to call people with disabilities but also the right verbs or adjectives used with the term disability itself or names of illnesses or diagnoses. The result will be a historical overview of terms connected with disability and their realisations and frequency in social media and newspaper articles in present times. The main resources for research will be corpora, including Corpus of Contemporary American English, English web corpus(used for analysing terms of the past 5 years), Corpus of Historical American English (for terms of the past century) and others. Frequency of disability terminology and collocations of such words will be analyzed . Below are some of the resources that will be used for this thesis. After data collection the most frequent terms connected with disability in the past and in the past 5 years and their collocations will be compared and contextually analyzed in order to be able to provide a final comparative overview.
