Guidelines
The aim of this research project is to answer the main question of the thesis regarding the role of cultural heritage during war conflicts; in addition, within a future vision, addressing new ways to deal with disaster management and ensure the global protection of cultural heritage sites, also to rehabilitate and reconstruct according to digital preserving and reconstructing methods. The first chapter deals with the ancient city of Palmyra as a case study. Initially, a historical review of Palmyra will be specified, along with Palmyra’s society, architecture, and the civilization of the Palmyrene people; in order to provide sufficient background information regarding the archaeological site of Palmyra. Afterwards, the destruction phase of Palmyra will be discussed; in addition to analyze the Islamic State ideology. Moreover, international, local, UNESCO, and the Syrian State reactions will be discussed. The following chapters will primarily focus on analyzing various aspects regarding the topics of the role of cultural heritage in war conflict and addressing Palmyra as a case study. The Comparison method will be applied after studying several examples of cultural heritage properties during war conflicts. The academic literature that will be used will focus especially on Palmyra, role of cultural heritage during conflicts, heritage in danger, and information obtained from news websites, such as information related to the situation of the population in Palmyra.
