Guidelines
The thesis will analyse and compare different representations of Sintra’s tangible and intangible heritage in the long nineteenth century, with focus on the cultural and social landscape of the place. The tracing of spaces in Sintra’s representations and the patterns found in different narratives have had their role in shaping Sintra’s identity. By understanding Sintra’s landscape evolution through these narratives, we will not only question their relevancy to its identity but also deconstruct the role that otherness and identity had in shaping of Sintra’s landscape representations in the long nineteenth century. This study will make use of a wide range of sources, such as travel literature, local and national literature about Sintra, paintings and engravings. These sources will allow us to get insight into representations of Sintra created by different narratives – based on texts and other visual socurces – that reflected their authors' sensoric experiences of the place, thus helping to re-create Sintra’s landscape.
