Guidelines

Bakalářská práce bude zkoumat použití spojek „if“ a „whether“ v závislých obsahových větách tázacích v mluvené britské angličtině. Závislé věty tázací se typicky vyskytují „po slovesech a výrazech vyjadřující otázku či nedostatek znalosti“ (Dušková et al., 1994: 601) a od samostatných tázacích vět se liší přímým slovosledem. Předmětem zkoumání budou „if“ a „whether“, tj. spojky, které si v uvozování závislé otázky zjišťovací konkurují (např. I am not sure whether/if it is worth while.) (ibid., 601). Předchozí výzkum ukázal, že závislé věty tázací jsou častěji uvozovány pomocí if než pomocí whether (Biber et al. 2021: 684-686; Kolbe-Hanna 2021). Podle Kolbe (2008: 129-136) navíc whether používají častěji ženy a starší mluvčí Přestože je if častější, v některých syntaktických pozicích je preferována spojka whether, např. ve funkci jmenné části přísudku (My main problem right now is whether I should ask for another loan.), v pozici po předložce (It all depends on whether they will support us.) nebo ve funkci apozice (You have yet to answer my question, whether I can count on your vote.) (Quirk et al., 1985: 1054). Kromě toho if nemůže uvozovat nefinitní větu s infinitivem (I don’t know whether to see my doctor today.) nebo být přímo následováno vazbou or not (He didn’t say whether or not he’ll be staying here.) (ibid., 1054). Práce bude mít za úkol na základě korpusových dat porovnat prozkoumat distribuci těchto dvou spojek a zjistit, zda tyto syntaktické restrikce platí i v britské mluvené angličtině, popř. které faktory mají na preferenci dané spojky vliv. Výzkum bude založen na 100-200 příkladech vět uvozených pomocí if/whether excerpovaných z korpusu britské mluvené angličtiny SpokenBNC2014.
Práce bude vypracována v anglickém jazyce.
