Guidelines
It has often been remarked that Marx speaks of human nature in the sense of a collective or ‘species’ being, i.e., the common physical and intellectual senses of man as employed in the process of production. What should be added, however, is that these senses are not pre-given. Production, according to Marx, produces reality that is both human and natural, and the form of the common element – the human element – is its virtual result. Yet production is never ‘one’; it is alienated, divided, separated from itself and appropriated for the purpose of its transformation into capital. It is this regime of production, the alienated regime, that impoverishes human nature and effectuates the deterioration of human senses. The model of production and its recording as developed by Deleuze and Guattari will be used in order to interpret alienation as a dynamic process differing from the pre-capitalist forms of economic appropriation. Marx’s own characterization of alienation should thus be brought into accord with other elements of his thought, including his critique of the political state as superstructure.
