Guidelines

Bakalářská práce se zaměří na menšinový a málo popsaný typ postmodifikace řídícího substantiva realizovaný jmennou frází [N NP], např. a man the size of a giant, a man my age či a tank (of) that size.
Teoretická část práce představí popis této kombinace dostupný v literatuře (postmodifikace, adverbiální interpretace, aj.), ne/podobnost s apozicí či srovnávací konstrukcí, její syntaktické vlastnosti (včetně testů) a sémantické vymezení (‚size, age, and similar properties‘ CamGEL 2002: 446).
Úkolem praktické části bude vyhledat co nejvíce relevantních příkladů (tzn. i jiných podstatných jmen než size a age), pomocí testů rozlišit a popsat jednotlivé podtypy s povrchovou realizací N+NP a popsat, za jakých podmínek nabývá konstrukce interpretace shodné s výše uvedenou. Cílem je popsat celkovou charakteristiku/rámec této konstrukce. Otázky, které se práce pokusí zodpovědět, zahrnují: sémantické vymezení postmodifikujících jmen na základě konkrétních substantiv doložených v této funkci (size, colour, age + možná další), rozdíly mezi the size of x this size, ne/možná alternace postmodifikace s předložkou (an animal of the size of Brachiosaurus), ne/možnost premodifikace jména v postmodifikaci (the exact size of), ne/přítomnost interpunkce a magnificent crisp lettuce, the size of a football. Poskytne celkovou charakteristiku modifikované NP (funkce, reference), případně registrové či diachronní tendence. Práce bude primárně využívat korpusů (BNC a Spoken BNC2014 pro britskou angličtinu a případně COHA a COCA pro americkou angličtinu).
Práce bude vypracována v anglickém jazyce.
