Coleridge's use of the supernatural and fantastic in his poetry invests his conception of imagination with a specific feature, which enables us to read his texts as dreams. The purpose of my thesis is to confront Coleridge's theoretical definition of imagination, as provided especially in his Biographia Literaria, with the way in which it is employed in his major poems. I will examine romantic understanding of dreams and its connection to imagination and, following Lowes´ interpretation of the practical application of Coleridge´s definition of imagination, compare this with Freud´s conception of the unconscious and dreams. The relevance of reached inferences will be verified in the context of chosen poems by Coleridge, such as The Rime of the Ancient Mariner, Kubla Khan and Dejection, An Ode.
