Guidelines
The aim of the thesis is to provide a corpus based analysis of Japanese verb-verb compound verbs and to create a comprehensive pedagogical word list accounting for their polysemy.
The student will first present the necessary theoretical background such as overview of characteristics and typology of Japanese compound verbs, criteria for a corpus and criteria for creating pedagogical word lists.
The main section will analyze representative samples of compound verb occurrences and categorize the occurrences by type (lexical/grammatical) and meaning, thus separating multiple meanings and subsequently re-evaluating their frequency. Possible ambiguities in categorization will be discussed. The analysis will be limited to a group of frequent verbs (either in general or verbs expressing direction).
Finally, a list suitable for learners will be provided summing up the results of the analysis.
