The collapse of USSR in 1991 became a starting point for the systemic changes in Eastern and Central Europe. These changes affected not just policy, but all spheres of life including urban development. The post-Soviet urban transformation is a specific chapter in the history of the cities. In our work we will focus on the influence of cultural quarters on districts’ development, using the cases of Uzupis in Vilnius and Kalamaja in Tallinn as examples. Today both of these districts are known because of their cultural activities and current high level of development, but at the same time they are on the UNESCO World heritage list. They play an important role in supporting the balance between preservation of historical heritage and modern development. We will consider the interdependence of the district’s development and emergence of cultural quarters and look at the distinctive features of these processes. |
