Guidelines
The second part of the 19th Century is a remarkable period in the history of transformation of Pera district of Istanbul into a cultural district, which shows up in appeareance of institutions like theatres, cafés, pastry shops, hotels and the like.
Pera district which is also known as Beyoğlu had been hosting various ethnical groups during through its long history, as well as in the middle of the 19th century. In this work I will examine its transformation in cultural district through the city plan, infrastructures, and four particular theatre buildings and their transformation process. Gradually increasing interactions between West and Ottoman Society have created a cultural infrustructure to prefabricate a cosmpolitan area in Pera. Social and daily life has been starting to change with appearance of occidental style institutions, among others theatre buildings. While examining this process I will show characteristics of 19th century’s Pera district and its cultural elements in the context of interaction with western culture. After that I will investigate the reasons of transformation and background of this process.
