Guidelines
The purpose of this essay is to look into the depiction of the Belgrade bombings that occurred in WWII under the command of both Axis and Allied forces. The image of these bombings would be analyzed in the press from the second half of 1990’s until the beginning of the 2000’s. This period was particularly chosen due to the fact that in 1999, Serbia witnessed the NATO intervention and therefore Belgrade, so as other cities in the country have been bombed for 78 days by the NATO troops. Given the fact that Belgrade was bombed for the first time after the Second World War, I look into the way how the bombings from WWII were depicted in the times when similarly traumatic event was taking place. I examine the depiction of these WWII events in the papers published in the times before, during, and after NATO intervention to see if it is possible to witness the resurgence of the memory of WWII bombings, especially the one performed by Anglo-American troops since this event has been kept under the shadow during the times of the Socialist Yugoslavia. With the analysis of the press, the other aim is to see if there are changes in the commemorative traditions of the events from the past due to the new circumstances, and I am interested in this potential resurgence of the memory of the Allied bombings and what the main reasons were for that resurgence.
