Guidelines
The main goal of the Master thesis is to analyze and determine the relationship between the construction of the pantheon of heroes in Colombia and the attempted consolidation of nationalism in the period between 1880 and 1910. This problem will be analyzed through a case study focused in two parts of Bogotá’s public space: The Centennial Park, which was built in 1883 to celebrate 100 years of Simon Bolivar´s birth, and the independence Park, erected in 1910 to celebrate the centenary of the independence of Colombia.
The project tries to answer the following question: What is the relationship between the consolidation of a pantheon of heroes in Colombia and the creation of a national identity between the end of the nineteenth and the beginning of the twentieth century? Through the selected case study, it is expected to make a historical narration that brings relevant information about the process of negotiation and construction of the parks, and also, the impact generated in the city with the arrival of the sculptures that were located in these public spaces. At the same time, it will be analyzed the genealogy of the images of sculptures that represented some Colombian historical characters that were designed and built by some French sculptors for the two celebrations. Finally, the narrative will show how was made the opening of the sculptures and parks in each case, the uses of these areas between 1883 and 1910, and the changes of these parks during the period studied.

The sources will be chosen according to three moments that are going to be developed within the research:
1. before the celebration; the negotiation and selection of the institutions; the projects for the parks.
2. The iconographic genealogies of the images of the sculptures.
3. The opening; discourses and meanings of the spaces; the uses of the spaces; the relationship between the sculptures and the parks.
