Guidelines |

Preliminary scope of work |
Preliminary scope of work in English |
When trying to understand processes using quantum mechanics we often find that the chosen
method is computationally too demanding to be applied to the whole system. If the process of interest is local (e.g., a chemical reaction), it is natural to divide the system into the region of interest (cluster) and environment. The cluster is then described by the method of choice while less demanding approach is used for the environment. This scheme is called embedding and the Nobel prize in 2013 was awarded for its initial development. The embedding approach is widely used to study strong correlations in solids or to understand chemical reactions on surfaces. When using embedding, in many cases one simply takes the cluster region as large as possible, limited by what the more accurate method allows. Such an ad hoc approach does not guarantee that the properties of interest are actually converged. Finding one ideal size of the cluster is not straightforward as the necessary cluster size will depend on the properties of studied material. The goal of this part will thus be to understand how physical properties of the material affect the convergence of the properties of interest. Most of the schemes used for embedding consider only electrostatic contributions coming from the environment and neglect the dynamical response of the environment. Here the goal will be to develop a model that would allow one to include the effect of the response of the environment when calculating binding energies. |
