Preliminary scope of work
Preliminary scope of work in English
Matrix factorizations provide a basic tool for solving problems of numerical linear algebra, and for describing and analysing numerical algorithms. In this thesis, we will investigate continuous analogues of matrix factorizations for contexts where vectors become univariate functions and matrices become bivariate functions. Algorithmically, these factorizations are related to recent methods of low-rank approximation of matrices and functions. The goal of this thesis is to summarize results about these analogues and about algorithms for their computations, and to perform numerical experiments using Matlab, and the toolbox Chebfun2 devoted to the problem of numerical approximation of bivariate functions.
