Preliminary scope of work
Research question and motivation
In my thesis, I am going to study the Chinese economic growth and its way from a poor to a middle-income country with the one of the highest influence on global markets. I would like to describe it from a broader point of view. It means that I will study its history and geographical position to understand its difficult situation in a breakpoint in 1978. I am going to look at its reforms, which drive an astonishing (but still incomplete) transitions – from a bureaucratic socialism to a market economy. I would like to answer the questions: What was a role of the planned economy in the Chinese progress? Was it an advantage or a disadvantage? What are the most important factors, which lead the transition? In the end, I am going to make a model of an actual Chinese production function and I try to find out changes in its structure. Respectively, find out if it is even possible to model it in this moment.

China is the biggest global economy and since 1978, it is able to sustain very high GDP growth rate (7% - 13%). It is opening to the world due to the reforms. According to its population, China has become a huge global market with high influence. It is important to understand China, its position, situation and its way from 1978 to nowadays. The development is still a mystery and there are just tentative hypotheses about its fundamental driving mechanism. In the world there proceeds an effort to reveal it and I would like to contribute to it.

Contribution
In the economic literature there have been many publications, which have tried to describe the Chinese ascent. But most of them (especially those from the US) claim that it happened mainly because of the economic opening and higher productivity spillovers. These authors may be right but they underrate the role of the planned economy and the specific behavioral characteristics of the Chinese agents, which are related to their history and geographical positon. I am going to attempt to describe Chinese growth from this point of view. In the end I will use the actual data to model the production function.

Methodology
In the first part of my thesis, I will collect information from the studies by Naughton, 2007 and Zhigang Yuan, 2014, and recent journal articles to understand the evolution of China. Then I am going to link these sources with data and direct the thesis to the description of Chinese growth towards from the point of view of empirically valid factors and the characteristics of Chinese economic agents as described above. In the second part - which involves the model – I am going to use a regression model with the actual data from the world resources.
