Preliminary scope of work in English
La Nouvelle Vague -the French ?New Wave? is one of the most significant artistic movements in the history of cinema.
This work focuses on two main areas of research: documenting and analysing ?the revolution? that was the New Wave, and elaborating the image of the ?Young Generation? of the 1960s as presented in the New Wave´s films.
The New Wave is one of the most important revolutions ever to have taken place in French cinematography. François Truffaut, Claude Chabrole, Jean-Luc Godard, Roger Vadim, Agn?s Varda and Alain Resnais are the main representatives of the ?Cinéma d´auteur?. Their works are a realistic, contemporary portrait of French society in the 60s: authentic and honest reflections of the opinions, attitudes, aesthetic sentiments and needs of young people.
This French youth of the 60s is a new generation searching for its own identity, own manner of expression, own way of life. They want to be ?themselves? ? independent and free of social and moral conventions regarded as outdated. The films of the New Wave confront and challenge these taboos of society, and a youth searching for heroes and role models finds them in the New Wave?s movies.
Thus, the New Wave was the crest of the tidal wave of liberty, emancipation and critical appraisal of the old that defined French society in the 60s.
