Guidelines

The present MA thesis focuses on a corpus of smA StA (Slaying the turtle) ritual scenes located on the walls of several Ptolemaic-Roman temples. The total of 13 attestations under study simultaneously belong to a broader group of apotropaic scenes from the period, more specifically to rituals neutralizing faunal adversaries. The turtle symbolizing the negative agent in the corpus at hand is specifically identified as the Nile softshell turtle (Trionyx triunguis), whose physical attributes and behaviour are in close, dynamic connection to the rite. The thesis therefore not only presents a study of the scenes depicted, along with the translation and analysis of the accompanying inscriptions, but also places the ritual in the context of the ethology and morphology of the particular turtle species. The syntax of these points aims to provide a cohesive overview of the ritual and may moreover contribute an interesting insight into the ancient Egyptian concept of apotropaia.

Tato diplomová práce se zabývá korpusem rituálních scén zvaných smA StA (Skolení želvy), jež se nacházejí na zdech několika řecko-římských chrámů. Celkem 13 doložených vyobrazení současně patří do širší skupiny apotropaických scén z této doby, konkrétně k ritům neutralizujícím zvířecí nepřátele. Želva symbolizující negativní element v níže studovaném korpusu je blíže identifikována jako kožnatka africká (Trionyx triunguis), jejíž fyzické atributy a chování jsou v úzkém a dynamickém spojení s daným ritem. Práce se proto zaměřuje nejen na vyobrazené scény společně s překladem a analýzou doprovodných inskripcí, ale taktéž zasazuje tento rituál do kontextu etologie a morfologie příslušného živočišného druhu. Syntax těchto bodů si klade za cíl poskytnout ucelený přehled o studovaném rituálu, ale může taktéž přinést zajímavý vhled do staroegyptského konceptu apotropaie.
