Preliminary scope of work |
Preliminary scope of work in English |
There was light at the birth of quantum mechanics, and it has accompanied it ever since, playing an instrumental role in its development. The experiments of quantum optics were used to probe the defining concept of quantum mechanics, particle entanglement, with the experiments awarded the 2022 Nobel price in physics. Contemporary quantum optics is a mature field, with quantum states of light being used as a resource in communication and metrology. New realms where quantum optics is just starting to make its impact are imaging and optical spectroscopy, where there are certain advantages over measurements with classical light. The key resource for such experiments are pairs of entangled photons. Within this diploma work, such photons will be generated by the process of spontaneous downconversion in a nonlinear crystal. An important part of the work will be spatially-resolved detection of the entangled photons, including characterisation of their quantum statistics. The work is carried out in collaboration with ELI Beamlines in Dolni Brezany, where the experimental part will take place (consultant Miroslav Kloz). |
