Preliminary scope of work in English
Why are females of many animal species promiscuous? This evolutionary enigma has long been studied with conflicting conclusions and there is still a lack of robust evidence that promiscuous behaviour is beneficial to females. This thesis will provide a review of the hypotheses proposed to explain female sexual promiscuity. It will specifically focus on the adaptive and non-adaptive explanations of female promiscuous behaviour in vertebrates, as well as review ecological and environmental factors associated with within-population, intraspecific and interspecific variation in the levels of promiscuity across vertebrate taxa.
