| Research question and motivation
What are the effects of the FTA on Czech economy? The Free Trade Agreement (FTA) between the European Union and South Korea was signed in 2009. The FTA and its effects on both parties have been broadly discussed by media and researchers. The aim of this thesis will be to analyze these effects, focusing mainly on the Czech Republic but also providing a comparison with the EU as a whole and potentially our neighbours. The trade relations between the Czech Republic and South Korea are very strong - South Korea is our third largest business partner outside the EU. The analysis of the trade data may therefore yield very significant results, applicable also outside the academic sphere. Since the FTAs are occasionally modified and there any many possible FTAs that the EU is negotiating, it is convenient to have information about the impact of previous agreements and about the preciseness of ex ante predictions. The main hypothesis: The Czech Republic-South Korea trade relations have strengthened considerably since the FTA application. Contribution Trade relations keep evolving, therefore any previous literature on this topic can be updated and specified. One of the most extensive studies on this topic was done by Association for International Affairs nearly 10 years ago and it estimated the effect of the FTA. In this thesis I will be using the most recent data to ensure its relevance and I will compare the effects with the estimated ones. The results will show the trend of the trade relations which may then be used to predict future trade development. Methodology To provide the desired results I will carry out an empirical analysis using the gravity model. Gravity model is commonly used for these types of analyses, i.e. when predicting bilateral trade flows. In this case, I will also use the gravity the model to evaluate whether we can still expect any changes or if the current trade condition is what the model predicts. Besides the gravity model, a descriptive analysis of the trade and its changes will be a part of this thesis and its aim will be to assess the previous analyses of this topic. The data will be taken from more sources, e.g. Eurostat and WITS (World Integrated Trade Solution). Outline 1) Introduction and literature review 2) Methodology 3) Data analysis 4) Empirical Results and Evaluation of the Hypothesis 5) Conclusion |
