Virus horečky dengue je zástupcem flavivirů přenášený na člověka komáry v oblasti tropů a subtropů. Patří mezi významné lidské patogeny stejně jako další flaviviry – virus žluté zimnice, virus japonské encefalitidy, virus západonilské horečky nebo virus klíšťové encefalitidy. Nákaza virem dengue může probíhat asymptomaticky, ale i jako život ohrožující hemoragická horečka. Existence čtyř sérotypů viru dengue je patrně největší překážkou při vývoji účinné vakcíny. První vakcína proti viru dengue byla licencována v roce 2015, v současnosti je vyvíjeno a klinicky testováno několik dalších vakcín.

Dengue virus is a member of Flaviviridae family transmitted to human by mosquitoes in tropical and subtropical regions. Dengue virus belongs to the important human pathogens together with other flaviviruses, like yellow fever virus, Japanese encephalitis virus, West Nile virus or tick-borne encephalitis virus. Dengue virus infection can occur asymptomatically, but also as life threatening hemorrhagic fever. The existence of four serotypes of dengue virus is probably the biggest obstacle to the development of an effective vaccine. The first dengue vaccine was licensed in 2015, several other vaccines are currently being developed and clinically tested.
