Preliminary scope of work |
Preliminary scope of work in English |
In the last two decades there was a substantial shift in the understanding of evolution of our species. It was suggested that the interaction between genes and culture might be of crucial importance. Distinctive human cultures work regularly as relatively isolated units with their bearers usually clearly distinguishing between individuals from the same and from the different culture. The origin of two distinct cultures from one, however, still lacks systematic scrutiny. As it is usually considered to be a result of certain (e.g. natural) obstacle formation or random migration of several individuals. The presented work aims to explore and mathematically model conditions under which a divergence is produced within the initially homogenous culture. It was shown, that the cultural transmission weakens cultural differences among individuals within a same group and, on the other hand, widens the gap between the groups taken as a whole. This phenomenon might be caused by selective imitation, i.e. a preferential imitation of self-resembling individuals. A role similar to that could be played by positive assortative mating as well, along with the tendency to strongly experience the difference between conspecific (in-group) and strange (out-group) culture members. The concept of reproductive networks is going to be established. These networks are formed by mating and social preferences of the individuals and develop in time based on an algorithm (stable marriage problem, probabilistic pairing), which pairs the individuals accordingly. Behaviour of such simulated networks is going to be studied under several different condition configurations (growing population, directional selection, variable degree of vertical and horizontal cultural transmission etc.) We aim to focus on the conditions that lead to the development of several, partially isolated reproductive networks from a single reproductive network. Under the assumption that there will be no important social flow between these networks, we can safely consider this event to be a sign of cultural split. |
