Preliminary scope of work |
Preliminary scope of work in English |
Numerical competence is one of the many aspects of animal cognition. This capacity can be found ranging in various levels from invertebrates to mammals. Numeric competences include the ability to estimate number or amount of items. Animals perform numerical discriminations in various processes, as: numerousness judgments, summation, subtilizing, counting. The other complex numerical operations are: ordinality, transitivity and cardinality,. These abilities are developed during ontogeny and phylogeny. This thesis focuses on the study of numerical competence of rhesus macaque (Macaca mulatta). It will test the ability of primates not only to estimate the amount of items but also their ability to integrate information about the number of items and their size (“quality vs. quantity”). |
