Preliminary scope of work
Since a long time the Drell-Yan (DY) process is considered to be a powerful tool to study hadron structure. So far several experiments were successfully carried out using unpolarised beams and targets. Nowadays, taking into account the much advanced understanding of the spin structure of the nucleon and the recent development in the experimental technique, a new generation of DY measurements using polarised beams and/or targets are under the preparation. One of the first DY experiment of this kind is being prepared at Compass at CERN. The main aim of the first measurement here is to study of the transverse-momentum-dependent parton distributions (TMDs) using the Drell-Yan process on a low temperature transversely polarised proton target (NH3) hit by a pion beam. One of the key experimetntal task is the modification of the unique Compass low temperature polarised target for Drell-Yan experiemnts to cope with high heat input from the pion beam as the prerequisite of the preparation of the new target holder, high frequency polarising cavity and NMR system for measuring of target polarisation in Drell-Yan studies. Among the distributions to be studied at Compass DY experiments are Sivers, Boer-Mulders and pretzelosity TMDs as well as transversely polarised quark distributions. This measurement will make it possible to test a most important prediction of QCD.
