Preliminary scope of work
Preliminary scope of work in English
The aim of this diploma thesis is to explore circumstances, which made the United States of America, under the leadership of the President Harry S. Truman, support the Zionists' endeavor to establish a Jewish commonwealth. Their strive eventually succeeded in May 1948, when the USA officially recognized Israel. After Truman's investiture into the White House, Franklin D. Roosevelt's legacy and his concept of the post-war settlement in Palestine was retained by the Department of State and the Department of Defense. Both departments promptly turned out to be main opponents of Jewish statehood. Given Truman's and White House's pro-Zionist views, such antagonism led to a bitter ideological clash.
To answer the question why and under what circumstances was the 33rd President of the USA instrumental in the partition of Palestine and consequent establishment of Israel, domestic and international aspects, that influenced the United States, will be put under scrutiny.
