Preliminary scope of work

Tato bakalářská práce zkoumá přístupy české herní žurnalistiky při zpracovávání ideologicky zabarvených témat na konkrétní mediální kauze hry Hogwarts Legacy. Pro tento účel představuje problematiku transgender lidí a souvisejících konceptů jako je gender a transfobie. Dále popisuje dosavadní pozici herní žurnalistiky v rámci kategorie té lifestylové a upozorňuje na přítomnost sexismu a diskriminace vůči ženám v herních mediích a herní sféře v kontextu kauzy Gamergate.
Praktická část analyzuje výběr článků z české herní žurnalistiky, které se věnovaly kauze videohry Hogwarts Legacy a držitelky licenčních práv k ní, J. K. Rowling. Články byly zpracovány pomocí otevřeného kódování a pro analýzu výsledných kategorií byly použity dvě kvalitativní metody: odlehčená zakotvená teorie (GT lite) a teorie rámcování.
Analýza zjistila, že přístup všech redakcí ke zpracování kauzy se lišil, ale že redaktoři*ky většinou o kauze psaly publicistickým stylem a uváděly o ní své osobní názory přímo i nepřímo. Odlišnosti v přístupech podporují dosavadní poznatky o nepřítomnosti dominantního paradigmatu ve světové herní žurnalistice. U některých médií byla patrná podobnost argumentů a chování se zastánci hnutí Gamergate: Zejména šlo o kritiku inkluzivních změn, které se neslučovaly s dosavadní ideologií herní kultury, a dehonestaci žen a transgender lidí na základě jejich kritiky hry a J. K. Rowling.

Preliminary scope of work in English

This bachelor’s thesis analyses the way Czech gaming media covers ideologically charged topics using a specific media controversy surrounding the game Hogwarts Legacy. For this purpose, it explains the matter of transgender people and related terms such as gender and transphobia. In addition it describes the position of game journalism within the category of lifestyle journalism and it stresses the presence of sexism and discrimination against women within it and other gaming spaces in the context of the GamerGate controversy.
The practical part analyses a sample of articles from Czech gaming media that covered the controversy of the video game Hogwarts Legacy and the IP creator, J. K. Rowling. The articles were processed using open coding and two qualitative methods have been used to analyse the resulting categories: Grounded theory lite and framing theory.
The analysis showed that the way newsrooms approached covering the story has differed, yet most of the reporters have written in a personal style and expressed their opinions both directly and indirectly. Differences in coverage support the current findings about the absence of a dominant paradigm in global gaming media. There were similarities in argumentation and behaviour of some media sites and supporters of the GamerGate movement. Notably it was the criticism of inclusive changes, which collided with the existing ideology of gaming culture, and the denigration of women and transgender people based on their critique of the game and J. K. Rowling.
