Preliminary scope of work

Diplomová práce se zabývá analýzou vztahu Spojených států a Izraele v kontextu teorie patron–klient. Po stručném historickém úvodu, jenž představuje utváření americko-izraelských vztahů ve 20. století, následuje teoretická kapitola, zabývající se vymezením teorie patron–klient, konkrétně její charakteristikou, základními principy, dynamikou a typologií těchto specifických vztahů patrona a klienta. Tento teoretický rámec je následně aplikován na bilaterální vztah Spojených států a Izraele, přičemž je mimo jiné zkoumána unikátnost či speciálnost jejich vzájemného vztahu. Empirická část práce se opírá o dvě případové studie analyzující dvě významné geopolitické události či krize (Válka v Zálivu 1990/1991, Dohoda o společném komplexním akčním plánu s Íránem ohledně jaderného programu 2015) definující výjimečný americko-izraelský vztah, na nichž je rovněž ilustrováno fungování patron–klient vztahu obou zemí během konkrétních krizí. Empirická kapitola je v závěru doplněna stručnou analýzou reakce Spojených států na teroristické útoky Hamásu na Izrael ze 7. října 2023, hodnotí americkou reakci a její bezprecedentnost či jedinečnost.

Preliminary scope of work in English

The thesis analyses the relationship between the United States and Israel within the context of the patron–client theory. After a brief historical introduction, which presents the formation of U.S.-Israeli relations in the 20th century, a theoretical chapter deals with the definition of the patron–client theory, specifically its characteristics, basic principles, dynamics, and typology. This theoretical framework is then applied to the bilateral relationship between the United States and Israel while, among other things, the uniqueness or specialness of their mutual relationship is examined. The empirical part of the thesis is based on two case studies analysing two significant geopolitical events or crises (the Gulf War of 1990/1991, the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action agreement with Iran on the nuclear program of 2015) defining the exceptional US-Israeli relationship, which also illustrate the functioning of the patron–client relationship of the two countries during specific crises. The empirical chapter concludes with a brief analysis of the United States' response to Hamas's terrorist attacks on Israel on October 7, 2023, evaluating the American response and its unprecedentedness or uniqueness.
