Guidelines |

Preliminary scope of work in English |
The neural network quantum states (NQSs) have recently emerged as a promising alternative to common trial states in variational Monte Carlo (VMC) studies of frustrated lattice spin models. These are notoriously difficult to address by standard theoretical methods. The research of NQSs is driven by the fact that neural networks (NNs) are universal function approximators. As such, they are expected to be able to approximate arbitrary quantum wave functions. Interestingly, several recent publications have already shown that even a relatively simple NQSs can outperform standard trial states in the variational search of the ground-state energies for various frustrated spin systems.
The goal of the thesis is to apply these techniques in the search of ground-stated properties of the model for the compound CeMgAl11O19. This material is currently investigated in the group of Gaël Bastien and the preliminary results suggest that it could have a quantum spin liquid phase. However, this has to be confirmed by a thorough theoretical analysis. For this goal the student will acquire several skills and will subsequently conduct his or her own research. In particular, he or she will master basic methods of machine learning in physics, variational Monte Carlo with neural network quantum states and will learn to analyse real materials by standard as well as machine learning techniques |
