The thesis examines lyrics of songs falling into the Argentine Rock Nacional genre that were written from the 1970s to 1983, focusing primarily on the military junta dictatorship period (1976-1983) lead by Jorge Rafael Videla. Using qualitative analysis, the thesis searches the lyrics for patterns and themes through which Argentine youth of the time (i.e. the genre’s primary target group) could identify the anti-establishment tone of protest Rock Nacional possesed. Furthermore, the thesis explores the ways in which a youth identity based on the rejection of the culture of the parents was formed through rock music and asks the following question: to what extent can we see Rock Nacional as a protest genre in a political way? And to what extent is this protest „only“ generational?
