Guidelines
The aim of the thesis is to create instrument control software for newly developed device ALSA. Device will be able to automatically orient and align hundreds of crystals. First position and shape of the crystals will be determined from the camera image using computer vision library OpenCV [1], then robotic arm Mecademic Meca500 [2] will grab the crystals one at a time, place them to the X-Ray beam and using provided API [4] retrieves crystal orientation. At the end, crystal will be glued to the final plate using crystal sorting algorithm [4]. Software will communicate with several hardware devices (six-axis robotic arm, X-Ray source, 7 CCD cameras, PLC controller) over different socket protocols and will provide GUI to show status of the work and diagnostic values from the instrument.

Preliminary scope of work in English
Automatic Laue Sample Aligner (ALSA) is a newly developed unique instrument at the Department of Condensed Matter Physics. Goal of the device is to increase the sample size for inelastic neutron experiments. It will fully automatize the co-alignment process by using a state-of-the-art X-Ray Laue diffractometer, robotized manipulators, real-time camera recognition and special software analysis for crystal placing. The device ALSA will be a true game changer in the field of inelastic neutron scattering, because it will drastically speed-up sample preparation.
Student will be part of the team of GAČR funded Junior Star excellent basic research project MaMBA (see https://mambaproject.cz/), where the device is currently constructed.
